Myth: Donating is painful and involves a long recovery.
Fact: It is not painful. The pain experienced is only of the needle prick. There is no pain during
Donation.
Myth: Donating is dangerous and weakens the donor.
Fact: Only 350 to 450 ml out of 5 liters of blood available in the body is taken. Hence it is not
dangerous at all. The donor may feel a bit weak immediately after the donation, but recovers
completely within a few hours. As donated blood is replenished with fresh blood, it is
advantageous to donate blood.
Myth: Being a vegetarian, means that the blood does not have enough iron and cannot be
donated.
Fact: A vegetarians can donate blood like any non-vegetarian. The iron needed is taken from
body stores and is replaced through normal vegetarian diet which takes a few weeks, so also for
non-vegetarians.
Myth: You cannot take part in sports or other physical activities after donating blood.
Fact: Giving blood does not interfere with ability to perform physically. It is advised to avoid
heavy weightlifting or strenuous workouts for the rest of the day after the donation. You can get
back on track the next day.
Myth: Blood collected from Donor is transfused directly to patient
Fact: Collected Blood is processed, checked for infections and antibodies and then tested for
blood group and compatibility and then only transfused
