The Department has sub- specialties like Cornea, Glaucoma, Squint, Retina, Oculoplasty and Neuro-Ophthalmology clinic with round the clock availability of Eye Bank services. The Department offers quality out-patient and in-patient services. The OPD has all thenecessary equipment like Auto-Refractometer, Keratometer, A-scan, Slit- Lamp Biomicroscopes, Humphrey Field Analyser, Synoptophore, Optical coherencetomography, Ultrasound A & B-scan, Fundus Camera, Diode and Nd–Yag Laser delivery system, to provide comprehensive eye care to the Community. Operation Theatre is well equipped with state of the art equipment like Ziess Operating Microscopes with CCTV, Visalis 100 version 2 Phacoemulsification and Vitrectomy machine. All patient’s attending Diabetic center, Kolar are screened for Retinopathy and other eye diseases and are referred to R.L.Jalappa hospital for surgical and laser therapy. To improve the knowledge and skill of students, museum, skill lab and wet lab facilities are utilized in addition to the demonstration with equipment available in the department. Outreach programmes like free comprehensive eye screening camps, Diabetic Retinopathy and school children screening camps are conducted regularly. Patients are also screened at rural health centers in Bellur and Devarayasamudra.Retinopathy of Prematurity screening is being done in collaboration with Vittala International Institute of Ophthalmology, Bangalore. Screening is conducted every Monday and the screened babies are followed up for treatment. Publications are being done periodically in reputed journals.

It is a pleasure to head the Department of Ophthalmology at Sri Devaraj Urs
Medical College. Ever since its inception three decades back, the department
offers programs in MBBS and Masters in Ophthalmology. A team of well
qualified, experienced and motivated faculty members have been successfully
performing the multiple roles in keeping with thedepartment’s vision and
mission in creating new knowledge, better patient care, the holisticdevelopment
of the students by instilling the quality of life long learner.
The growth of expertise in the department is commendable, possessing high
growth path and has experienced and dedicated faculty with strong commitment
towards research and publication. The holistic development of the students is
focused on periodic updating of curriculum, evidence based medicine and
instilling all the qualities of “Indian Medical Graduate” to mould them in to a
good and proficient citizen .Department constantly works for overall growth of
students and inculcate the qualities Required and a sense of responsibility in
them to contribute towards the betterment of the society. We regularly organises
various professional development activities like outreach programs, CME,
observation of National and International health programs and maintain the
proficiency by motivating the students participation in paper presentation,
workshops and quizzes, Sports, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at
university level; thus fetching them fellowships in different fields of
Ophthalmology.
